What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic healthcare approach that aims to treat the whole person, not just their symptoms, through gentle manual techniques to improve the body's function and reduce pain and discomfort.

Osteopaths believe that the body can self-heal and self-regulate, and they work to enhance this natural ability by addressing the root cause of health concerns.

Osteopathy also emphasises the importance of lifestyle factors, such as nutrition and exercise, in promoting overall health and wellbeing.

What do osteopaths do?

Osteopaths are trained to treat a wide range of health concerns that affect the musculoskeletal, nervous, and circulatory systems, as well as other parts of the body.

Some conditions that osteopaths commonly treat include back pain, neck pain, headaches, sports injuries, arthritis, TMJ issues, respiratory problems, and postural problems. Osteopaths also help manage the effects of chronic conditions, such as asthma, fibromyalgia, digestive issues and chronic fatigue syndrome. They may collaborate with other healthcare providers to provide comprehensive care to their patients.

Additionally, osteopaths may provide preventative care, such as advice on ergonomics, exercise, and stress management, to help patients maintain optimal health and prevent future health issues.

Who can benefit from osteopathy?

Everybody and every body! Osteopathy can benefit babies and toddlers who may be experiencing feeding difficulties, digestive issues, or difficulties with movement. Pregnant women can also benefit greatly from osteopathy, as it can help alleviate the physical strains that pregnancy places on the body. After childbirth, postpartum osteopathic treatment can assist in the recovery process, particularly for women who have had difficult deliveries or C-sections. Menopause is another stage where osteopathy can provide relief, particularly for women experiencing symptoms such as insomnia and joint pain. Finally, osteopathy can help maintain mobility and alleviate the aches and pains that can come with aging for people in the later stages of life. Overall, osteopathy is a versatile form of therapy that can support people throughout all stages of life.

 FAQs

  • No, you can make an appointment directly without a referral. If you have been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition and require complex care you may be eligible for Chronic Disease Management (CDM) assistance. The GP must complete a special referral form to refer you to an Osteopath for treatment under a CDM plan.

  • Please remember to bring any X-rays, scans, or test results you may have with you to your appointment.

You’re also welcome to bring along a friend/partner/child etc. We have a collection of toys and books to entertain little (and big) children alike!

  • We value your comfort, and therefore suggest wearing comfortable clothing like a loose-fitting shirt and pants, or shorts that you can change into. During the treatment, your osteopath may need to access the affected area and discuss the removal of clothing. Please be assured that we will provide you with a gown or cover you with a towel to ensure privacy.

  • Osteopathic treatment is mostly manual therapy and should not cause excessive discomfort, but if hands-on treatment of painful areas is needed, your osteopath will work with you to ensure your comfort. While some techniques may cause short-term discomfort or pain, any mild soreness experienced afterward is similar to that felt after mild exercise and should subside within a day or two. Your osteopath will discuss this with you and provide after care advice. If soreness persists or increases, do not hesitate to contact your osteopath to discuss your concerns.

  • The first appointment will last for one hour to allow for a comprehensive medical history and examination to determine the most suitable treatment plan. Subsequent appointments will be 40 minutes long.

  • An initial consultation fee is $175, while a subsequent consultation costs $113. Don't forget to bring your health insurance card to every appointment if you are eligible for a private health insurance rebate. Our HICAPs terminal allows us to claim this for you, and we will charge you the gap after processing the rebate.
